Borderlands compete for £50,000 Lottery funding

Borderlands is one of five charities in the ITV West Country East region to be selected for the chance to win £50,000 worth of project funding from The People’s Projects competition.

The competition is a joint venture between ITV and The Big Lottery Fund. The winner of the competition will be chosen in a public vote to be held between 9am on Monday 29 February and 12 noon on Sunday 13 March.

ITV visited our busy Borderlands drop-in on Tuesday 9 February and filmed our staff, members and volunteers discussing the mentoring project and demonstrating how we would use the funding. Our film will be shown on ITV West Country News on Tuesday 1st March from 6 – 6.30pm and you can also view it below. Voting is available online at www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk.

We were selected by The People’s Projects for our proposal for a mentoring project. If we are successful, the grant funding will be used employ a Mentoring Project Manager and professional trainers to train 100 volunteers as mentors. Volunteers from other local immigration charities and people from the local community will also be trained. The mentors will forge strong one-to-one relationships with refugees and will be a vital point of advice and support. Mentors will help refugees to gain important local knowledge and skills that allow them to handle the sort of everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. It will enable our refugees to make their own way in life and help them to lead independent, productive, fulfilled lives.

There have been offers of help from many members of the public in response to the immigration crisis in Europe. Our project would give people a practical and safe way of being of help locally and also learn a lot about other cultures and themselves along the way.

‘You’ve Got A Friend In Me’ will be familiar to those of you who’ve seen the film Toy Story. The song lyrics resonate strongly with Borderlands mentoring project objectives… so it’s no surprise that the song is our campaign slogan too!

Since 2005, The People’s Projects have given the public a say in awarding more than £30 million of National Lottery funding to 600 Good Causes across the UK. We are hoping to be part of this amazing legacy so please vote for Borderlands’ mentoring project now at www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk.
